there was this meme going around that some people asked me to do... now, emerging from my manic life for a brief, cleansing moment, does anyone remember

Association Meme: Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

?

If you do, you'll find out what [info]eclecticfan and [info]darandkerry  asked under their respective cuts...

5 things that Kimly associates with me... ) 5 things that Ann associates with me... )

So, [info]jaina47  suggested...

1. Fluffy fics

Once upon a time, in the world of SVU there was a writer called caveatreader who wrote some fabulous 'fluffs' that, if you haven't read, should be consumed at speed and without pause over at P&P (posted as 'Del').  Late at night one early morning I had a go at 'fluffing' something that had been said on one of the SVU lists at Yahoo and discovered I was rather ok at random stories... from there I had a go at CSI and out of that kimly ([info]eclecticfan) created the fluff challenge community which I played in, a lot.  RL and other pressures have seen my fluff output dwindle now although I've written probably close to 200 short silly stories across a dozen or more fandoms... I guess for me it's a form of drabbling, producing 500-3000 word fics which have the sole purpose of making a point with a smile, even if some of those points might actually have been rather pointed commentaries about issues in fandom that were irking me at the time (for obvious reasons, I'll just let people guess at those...).  I still do write them on occasion although I no longer hang out at the fluff comm, which is bad, especially given I'm a mod....

2. Sarah Mackenzie

Is the reason I watch JAG... sort of.  There is a lot about JAG that I cannot stand, and Sarah Mackenzie is on that list... but there is also a lot about JAG that I like, and Sarah Mackenzie is on that list (but I'll talk about JAG below).  She's an interesting character - obviously strong but without (most of the time) lurching into superhero territory that just defies plausibility.  I normally struggle to write femslash for characters with such a high profile canon love life as Mac was given, but for some reason, I've managed to find an inner rationalisation, perhaps because of all the canon rule bending story lines she's had which manage to not completely destroy her character (afterall, JAG officers do hold the rules fairly sacrosanct...).

3. Fifty States fic thingie

I take it you mean my Great American Lesbian Search self challenge? The object (for those not in the know) is to write femslash fic for Sarah 'Mac' Mackenzie of JAG who is blessed, in my personal opinion, with a character that is perfect for femslash except for a total dearth of canon potentials (I've only ever seen Coates/Mac as a canon pairing which isn't my personal cup of tea).  Obviously the only route available to me was crossovers so, in order to try and see who might be Mac's perfect partner, I set about writing her with all the different characters I could think of, with the United States as a prompt to make me think of characters.  Unfortunately, it became apparent that Mac and Sam Carter were a great match so I got distracted... then Alex Cabot and Mac were a great match so I got distracted... then Kate Harper and Mac were a great match... as is Elizabeth Weir and Mac... suffice to say, Mac isn't travelling as much as she ought to be as I'm struggling to stick to my self made challenge of writing just one shortish fluff per state.... but I will continue - if nothing else, it's providing a great opportunity for me to find out a bit more about the USA's less... widely remarked upon places!

4. The UK

Is where I hang my hat, have always hung my hat and is probably where I will continue hanging my hat although I might end up taking some overseas contracts some day....

5. JAG

Is a fun show most of the time, except when it gets too Harm-centric for my liking.  It has everything this girl likes - uniforms, guns, explosions, crime, the law... and it was showing in 5 episode back-to-back marathons the weeks I was on sick leave unable to move much.  Nothing like 5 eps a day for 10 days whilst on strong pain pills to feed an addiction!

[info]lysachan picked five things...

1. Hospital Central...

...is an interesting show, especially if you don't speak Spanish (which I don't) and if you don't like baby! stories (which I don't), like an angst-free fandom canon (which I do) and you're not a massive fan of maintext (which I'm not).  Unsurprisingly, perhaps, this is very much a 'phase' show for me - I go through phases of obsessively watching clips on youtube and writing stuff... but then I go through phases where I don't really think anything at all of the show.  Originally, I blamed [info]ralst for getting my attention distracted by it but now I just blame the fact that it was easy to write light, humourous snapshot type scenes... I probably don't play with this fandom nearly as much as some might like whilst also dabbling far too much for some...

2. Writing Fanfiction...

...is something that I do, although not now as much as I used to.  Oh for the days of being a bored research student who had long empty days during which I created free time, read fanfic, daydreamed a bit then started writing my own stories.  One wrist reconstruction later (not fic related I hasten to add) and god knows how many hours (and ££) later, my relationships with various physiotherapists are extremely well developed and my ability to write for hours is no more, not least due to now having a day job!  I'm sure I frustrate loads of people with my on-going sagas... why didn't I trip over a muse who liked to write short one-shots?  Or, if nothing else, a muse that didn't suffer from ADD and a insatiable desire to respond to challenges, no matter how obliquely or casually thrown out.  There are very few fandoms (I can't think of any actually) from which I manage to read multiple stories without then also writing something...

3. Alex/Olivia...

... is a pairing I regard as a 'classic' and one which might perhaps be rediscovered with the fourth coming of Alex Cabot (the first we all swooned (s2-Loss), the second we all wailed (Ghost... oh the sub-text), the third we've blanked out (Conviction anyone?)), although the de-pinking and re-butching of Olivia would also help.  It's one of my favourite pairings to write, especially as part of an ensemble type piece involving the other detectives.  I've managed to take this pairing through everything from song fic and drabbles through to angst and fluffs, not to mention snark, the shrink, the Oscars and even Las Vegas.

4. Long breaks on updating LJ...

... is an inevitability when you combine RL with my wrist issues (when I have the time to type I often don't have the limbs functioning), general reluctance to write about nothing in particular and a frequent belief that I exist in such a sleepy backwater of the interweb thingy that my LJ would be happiest left undisturbed.  I shall however take this as a small hint to perhaps pay it better attention...

5. Voyager...

... is a fandom that I've read far, far more of than anything else, including several tonnes of Janeway/Chakotay in my misguided and confused youth... but is a fandom that I've written far less for than I always think I should have done, with the bulk of my stuff being 'fluffs'.  Stories showing what happens after Voyager returns to the Delta Quadrant are my particular weakness (especially if Seven and Janeway end up happily enjoying a post Delta Quadrant utopia) which is why perhaps I'm slowly writing one...

I hope that answered your comments in a vaguely interesting way... if nothing else, my LJ is now a little more up-to-date *g*

I wasn't even feeling concerned about being serially single until saw the card and then had to suffer the parents at dinner being 'pleased' about sending the cards...

A question... Spanish flavoured

I'm not sure my LJ is really in wide enough circulation in the right sort of circles for me to be able to ask these sort questions... but... apropos of something...

For those that have seen Hospital Central... 'Wilson' is immediately associated by the characters as being a rich wine/cognac making family from Jerez.  Is this a previously established piece of canon or did they just invent it the moment Maca arrived? [In other words, does the show give us any more information about 'Wilson'?]

Thank you should anyone know the answer.

TITLE: And the sky's still up over Iceland...

AUTHOR: [info]ncruuk

RATING: PG

DISCLAIMERS: The shows belong to their creators, the pop-culture references belong to pop-culture and the events referenced throughout this story are garnered from the BBC reporting on this issue

FANDOMS & PAIRINGS: (Not the ones I originally intended to use, but never mind) An ecletic mix - L&O (Abbie/Serena); SG1 (Sam/Janet); NCIS (Jenny/Ziva); Bad Girls (Helen/Nikki); Hospital Central (Maca/Esther)

SPOILERS: A working knowledge of the shows helps but isn't essential... although there are technically two tiny spoilers for L&O and Hospital Central that I'm personally not convinced are spoilers as they are from series long ago and now both accepted as part of the rich tapestry of the show

REASON FOR WRITING: I felt I needed to tip my hat in this direction on this most landmark of non-landmarks... and then I rejoined the real world in which this event really needs to be acknowledged as the progressive step it is.

Good news.... kinda

Cold Case, Warm Hearts, Cold Feet
I shan't bore you with the mess my life has been for the last 6-12 months or why I was at one point actively hating femslash and the internet and television...

but...

I've started reading some fic again... which is good.  Specifically, I've started re-reading my own fic again... which is egotistical, I know, but I think you will all decide this is a good thing when I say...

I've just read the crossover bit to Cold Feet, Cold Case, Warm Hearts... and it's good, but unfinished.  I want to know what happens next.

Guess that means I'll have to write it.

Please - do moderate your expectations... you will not see thousands of words of updates to this story in the next week or month.

Just know, it is no longer in my 'never want to see or think about' folder... so there is hope, and light at the end of that tunnel.

Maybe.

... I have a Hospital Central question which I hope someone can answer.

I used to watch Hospital Central clips on Youtube and have even written some short things for it... but I sort of stopped, and then fully stopped.

And then I started again.  Reading fic.  And, more significantly for this question, found a fabulous person on youtube who has the Maca/Esther storyline distilled into clips for every season with English subtitles... which leads me to my question.

If I don't want to be tortured with the angst of  the whole cheating/break up/sleep with a man/more pregnancies/go out with others stuff which I understand happens in later series... how far into the show can I watch and still have Maca/Esther together and sappily, happily together?  I've got to the end of s10 and can stop at this point, with them about to honeymoon in places unknown or I can continue into s11 and beyond... but the question is how far beyond? Life is hideous enough as it is without needing maintext angst....

Can anyone tip me off as to when to stop watching? Equally, if there's a 'happily ever after' ending, can someone clue me in as to when to start again?

Sorry for the laziness on my part... I'm a sap who likes happy endings (which for this show = Maca & Esther)

Thank you in advance.

So I created a blog....

Mac
which can be found on blogspot.com called 'Observations by a Bemused Spectator'.

Right now it is rather new and underwhelming in content, but going forward I look forward to making use of it as a place to capture my thoughts on things that I most definitely am not an active participant in, but am instead watching from a distance whilst scratching my head and going 'huh?'.  It will sort of replace my using LJ for the sorts of posts I made that are tagged 'hmm'.

It will probably be a little political in places, certainly be a little bit gay at times and definitely rather English in a number of places... rather like the writer!

Here endeth the PSA for my new blog.  Thank you for reading.

Rachel Maddow

[We temporarialy interrupt your regularly scheduled broadcast of fanfiction and random occasional bemused post to mention something about politics...]

So, I've just discovered Rachel Maddow... and wow.

If you haven't watched her show yet, I recommend you head to the MSNBC website and watch some clips.  Even if you can't stand her politics (and being in the UK I'm not fully conversant with how my lefts and rights align with US lefts and rights, nevermind conservatives, liberals and socialists) admire her attitude and stance - that she will talk with anyone (including Pat Buchannan, which I understand is something quite amazing, although personally I think her ability to cope with Frum one of most incredible piece of TV debate I've ever seen) about anything... as long as they do it politely.

She, with wit and style, intelligently addresses aspects of politics and, bearing in mind I'm English, in England, makes me interested in the American Political process.  Her podcast is now on my IPOD, along with the best of BBC Radio 4, including the News Quiz which I heartily recommend to anyone who has an interest in how we do things like that here....

[Returns to regularly scheduled broadcast.]
